Launch small, learn fast
Most startups do not fail because the code was bad. They fail because they spent months building something nobody wanted. A Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is the smallest version of your product that real users can try, so you can learn what works before investing heavily.
What an MVP is, and what it is not
An MVP is not a half-finished product or a demo. It is a small, working product that solves one core problem well enough that early users will use it, and ideally pay for it.
Step 1: Define the one problem you solve
Write down who your user is, the problem they have today, and how they solve it now. If you cannot describe this in two sentences, the scope is not ready.
Step 2: Cut the feature list ruthlessly
List every feature you want, then keep only what is needed for a user to get the core value. Admin panels, advanced reports, multiple languages and integrations can usually wait.
Step 3: Choose web, mobile or both
A responsive web app is usually the fastest and cheapest way to validate an idea. Build native or cross-platform mobile apps when your product depends on the phone: camera, location, notifications or offline use.
Step 4: Build in short cycles
Work in one- or two-week iterations with a demo at the end of each. This keeps the budget under control and lets you change direction early.
Step 5: Launch, measure, iterate
Add simple analytics before launch, talk to your first users, and decide what to build next based on what they do, not just what they say.
How long and how much?
A focused MVP typically takes weeks rather than months. The biggest driver of cost is scope, which is why step 2 matters most. A good partner will help you cut scope, not inflate it.
Choosing a development partner
- Ask to see products they have launched, not just designs.
- Make sure you own the source code and accounts.
- Prefer weekly demos and fixed milestones over open-ended billing.
- Check that they build on a stack that can scale, so the MVP does not need a rewrite.
